5 Reasons to be Excited for Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story’s release date is fast approaching. As the new installment in the multi-billion dollar franchise, it’s got a lot of eyes on it, although these eyes have been more discourse-filled than usual due to all the director and studio issues. But let’s stay optimistic and consider these five reasons to look forward to Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 25th.

1) Donald Glover as Lando

Perhaps the most exciting casting in a Star Wars film is Donald Glover as young Lando Calrissian. As a writer, producer, musician, director, and actor, he seems like one of the most talented actors to work on a Star Wars film. He seems to really respect these characters and this universe—he’s spoken about his love for the character and the franchise and said he only wanted to make the film if it does justice to the character. This dedication to the universe means a lot to the fans of the franchise. With all this, Glover as Lando has the most potential to be a home run for this movie. There is no doubt he’ll steal every scene he is in as the smooth talking con-man come May 25th.

2) Writer Lawrence Kasdan

The Academy Award-nominated writer and producer Lawrence Kasdan is the writer of the film. He carries a very trustworthy legacy as the writer of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, a movie considered by many as the greatest Star Wars film of all time, and also Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi. He stated in interviews time and time again that Han Solo is his favorite character and he thinks there are many stories that could be told about Han’s upbringing. He also said that this will be his last Star Wars film that he works on, and he wouldn’t have taken this movie as his last mark on the Star Wars universe if he wasn’t confident with it. He is an extremely talented and fan-favorite writer and having him as a part of Solo will undoubtedly bring a fresh and exciting story for the titular character.

3) Director Ron Howard

Although there was some discourse behind the scenes of Solo in summer 2017, the news that Ron Howard was brought on board to direct the movie calmed some of the waters. The Academy Award-winning director said he was very interested in the story that takes place in Solo, stating that, “the Star Wars universe that we see in Solo was different from anything else we’ve seen in any previous Star Wars movies. The Empire controls everything. Everyone is struggling to survive, but we discover this incredible free spirit.” He seems very proud of the finished product and even gives consistent updates about the movie’s production. His enthusiasm in the role should give fans hope for the end product.

4) Han and Chewie

One of the most appealing aspect about this film is that we will get more details on the dynamic duo’s story before A New Hope. From the footage so far, we can see that Han and Chewie will meet for the first time in this film. We will hopefully see how their friendship comes to be and some of the adventures they undertake. We might also get to see them do the Kessel Run, which Han references in his first scene in A New Hope as a way to describe the speed of the Millennium Falcon. Hopefully their relationship in Solo will add and gives us more background to their scenes in the original trilogy.

5) Production

Of all the possible places where this movie could go wrong, technical should not be one of them. The beautiful shots we have seen from the movie so far were shot by the talented Bradford Young, who boasts an impressive resume, such as his Academy Award-nominated cinematography in 2016’s Arrival. From the footage we’ve seen we can already infer that this might be the best looking Star Wars film so far. John Williams is writing the theme for this movie and John Powell will compose it along with the rest of the soundtrack. With Young’s mouthwatering cinematography and Powell’s hopefully unique score, I have no doubt that this will be a delightful film to watch on the big screen.
