Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy Are a Force to be Reckoned in ‘Harley Quinn’ Series

If you haven’t checked out DC Universe’s adult animated Harley Quinn series, you’re definitely missing out. With season one finished and season two now upon us, the new series has proven itself to be another hit for the streaming service, with mainly positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.

With the basis of season one focused on Harley’s break-up with Joker, it’s even more so about Harley finding herself after escaping an abusive relationship. From the very first episode, you’re rooting for Harley’s emancipation, and for her to see the light in regards to what she and the Joker have going on – which of course is easier said than done as she loves the Clown Prince of Crime. Despite this being the major obstacle in Harley’s way, she also finds support from fellow Arkham Asylum detainee, Poison Ivy.

Ivy is very blunt with Harley and while the former botanist never beats around the bush, in true friend fashion she always wants to make sure that she doesn’t hurt Harley’s feelings. Break-ups are hard and Ivy recognizes this. So, while she obviously knows that the Joker is trash, she never undermines the emotions that Harley has for her former flame. Ivy is the voice of reason in Harley’s madness and their friendship is written so well in the series. Coupled with the comedy, the kinship between Harley and Ivy is truly one of the show’s standout elements. Their interactions are some of the best throughout the series and if the duo had a spin-off that consisted solely of their exploits together, I’d most certainly watch it.

It’s likely that we have a friend like Ivy, or at least know someone like her. The one who gives us the best advice and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is – even when we may not be on our best behaviour. It’s something that makes their friendship on the series so relatable. It’s refreshing to see a relationship such as theirs on-screen. Thus far, none of their fights have been due to pettiness, such as vying for the affection of the same man. It’s always come from a place of love for one another and that’s how it should be. Of course they argue and annoy one another from time-to-time, but it’s never over something insignificant. Fellow TV shows could stand to learn a thing or two about friendships between women from the Harley Quinn series.

The trailer for season two may have fans guessing about what’s coming next between Harley and Ivy. Will it be something more than just platonic? It’s an element to their story that showrunners have hinted at, but just when or how it will appear on the series is yet to be seen. After having seen the first three episodes of the new season, I can’t confirm anything. That being said, there is definitely something that throws a wrench into whatever fans may be hoping to see. However, it would be interesting to see the series go the same route as the comic books with Harley and Ivy finding more than friendship with one another. However, fans of the animated series will just have to wait and see what happens between two of Gotham’s baddest broads as season two of Harley Quinn progresses.

The second season Harley Quinn began streaming on April 3!
