Jujustu Kaisen 0 – Review

JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 will satisfy fans new and old with breathtaking animation, strong voice acting, likable characters, and an engaging story. Even those with limited anime experience will enjoy the tightly woven plot and universal themes.

JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 follows the story of Yuta Okkotsu, a high school student who enrolls in the mysterious Tokyo Jujutsu High School. Fans of the anime and manga will quickly realize this story does not continue with the primary protagonist, Yuji Itadori, but serves as a prequel. Still, the film features many beloved characters like Satoru Gojo and students from the school, each with their unique powers and abilities.

The film is based on the mange of the same name from Gege Akuta. JUJUTSU KAISEN has become a best-selling manga from the moment it hit shelves, winning awards and gaining international intrigue from fans. The series hits all the notes that make a Shonen project great, with themes that are universal and enough actions to keep all-ages engaged. For this review, I watched the subtitled version of the film, to see the film in its original form and original voice actors.

By far, the most brilliant element of JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is in its animation. TOHO Animation and MAPPA combine to create flawless visuals. The animated series set the bar high for fluid animation and incredible quality in each frame and shot. The film improves upon this, creating one of the most gorgeous anime films in recent memory.

From the story perspective, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 does well by making Yuta likable and engaging. His tragic and mysterious story serves as a backdrop for new and familiar characters to play in. At times, the stakes of the film do not carry the same weight as the primary series timeline, but it remains riveting enough to stay invested throughout.

Overall, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 boasts incredible animation, beautiful fight sequences, and an engaging story to be one of the boldest anime films of the last few years.
