The 50th Toronto International Film Festival arrived with a milestone slate dense and overflowing with talent, ambition and a palpable sense of anticipation. Among the many long-awaited films, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value stood out as one of the most layered and subtle narrative works. The Norwegian film , which saw a record breaking 19-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, reunites Trier and Renate Reinsve, whose earlier collaboration on The Worst Person in The World garnered well reception. The pairing carries over that chemistry , it’s time exploring a complex and quite emotional story about family, trauma and the creative process.

Sentimental Value is a family drama centred around a prominent filmmaker, Sellan Skarsgard, who returns to the family home after his wife’s passing and attempts to reconnect with his two daughters, played by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. The peace of his absence is disrupted as fractures in the families framework begin to surface. The film also stars Elle Fanning in an impactful supporting role which leaves a lasting impression throughout the film.
Reinsve plays an actress whose creative process is disrupted by a dormant childhood trauma resurfacing as she struggles to work. Opposite her, Skarsgard delivers a controlled, quietly weighted performance as a father casting a shadow over his family, both artistically and emotionally. The dynamic between the two forms the film’s heartfelt emotional axis. Together, they deliver stand-out performances that are sure to be mentioned come award season.

Visually and technically, the film is masterfully made. The clean composition and tame pacing allows a breath for each intimate layer, mirroring the films thematic position through its structure. The dialogue is heavy and characters are compelling. Ultimately, Sentimental Value is a devastation exploration of family, creativity and trauma. Precisely constructed as it lingers with subtle emotion. This film is not only one of Trier’s finest words, but also one of the strongest entries at this year’s festival so far.
